Official Recap: 2018 Gotham Hoops Invitational
FLUSHING, NEW YORK -- The 2018 Gotham Hoops Invitational powered by BODYARMOR Sports Drink hosted 36 top men's college basketball seniors before fans, media and scouts.
Semifinal No. 1
The first contest of the 2018 Gotham Hoops Invitational began as a back-and-forth affair before Team Wooter (2-0) expanded on a fourth quarter lead to defeat Team Molten (0-2), 86-72. The victors were led by Mike Williams' (Rutgers University) game-high 25 points. Back-court mates Danny Upchurch (University of New Haven) and Tyaire Hudson (Neumann University) added 16 and 13 points each, respectively. Guard James Mitchell (St. Thomas Aquinas College) scored a team-high 16 points (4-9 3PT) for Team Molten.
Semifinal No. 2
The second semifinal match-up pitted Team BODYARMOR (1-1) up against Team Court Grip (1-1). Trailing from behind for most of the game Team Court Grip made a valiant effort late in the second half but were unable to string together enough stops-and-scores to complete the comeback. Junior Saintel (Stony Brook University) scored 18 points on 7-11 shooting in the 84-72 win for Team BODYARMOR. Former St. Peter's University standout Cavon Baker posted a team-high 16 points in the loss.
Third Place Game
The consolation game came down to the wire with both teams trading baskets and leads over four quaters. In yet another back-and-forth contest it would be Team Court Grip coming out on top, 71-67, over Team Molten. Baker (18 Points) led Court Grip in scoring for the second consecutive game as teammates Zac Tillman (Monmouth University) and Ore Arogundade (Drake University) added 13 points each. In the hard fought loss it was Mitchell led Molten in scoring with a team-high 14 points.
The final bout of the night was a fast-paced, high-scoring affair with ten players scoring in double-digits. The finals match-up featuring Team BODYARMOR and Team Wooter saw a plethora of lead changes in this one. With this one coming down to the games final possessions, a go-ahead free-throw by Upchurch (5 Points) would seal the deal and championship victory for Team Wooter. Williams led all scorers with 29 Points and 11 Rebounds as teammate Zane Waterman (Manhattan College) notched his own double-double with 26 Points and 10 Rebounds. Former Big East standout Ahmed scored a team-high 23 Points (8-16 FG) in the loss for Team BODYARMOR.
