Former NBA All-Star and newly-appointed University of Memphis head coach Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway has added former NBA head coach Sam Mitchell to his staff, according to hoopshype.com
Following a 13-year playing career in the NBA, Mitchell has enjoyed a successful second career in coaching at the pro level. He served as the head coach of the Toronto Raptors from 2004-2009 and as an assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks, New Jersey Nets and Minnesota Timberwolves.
Mitchell’s most recent coaching gig came when the late, great Flip Saunders took a leave of absence in 2015. As a result, Mitchell was named interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Additionally, Mitchell currently serves as Head Coach of the U.S. Virgin Islands’ National Basketball team, a position he has held since 2015.
Though there has been some skepticism as to how Hardaway will fare as a Division I head coach following just a few years of coaching at the high school and AAU levels, the move to hire a seasoned veteran like Mitchell should undoubtedly put some of that doubt to rest.
